November 2008 |
|
Welcome to November's new look edition of e.manager. In this edition, as winter draws on, Ray Moorcroft considers the little things that others don't. The things that come naturally to you that help the world go around. We launch the new Member's login area and we draw some comparisons between administrative management and commanding a guided missile destroyer in the United States Navy!
We'd like your help to pilot a new, free, HR toolkit, we also show you how to achieve continuous improvement and in the tenth edition of our 'How to' series, Mark and Carl show you how to plan for your resources.
We hope you enjoy the latest edition of e.manager. If you have any comments or feedback for us then please contact Richard Jane with your views.
If you no longer wish to receive e.manager please click here to email us with your name and organisation.

Message from the Chief Executive

I am very pleased to extend a special IAM welcome this month to all of our new members. I would also like to congratulate in advance, those who will be receiving the certifikat of School Business Management together with the dual award of the IAM's dyplom in Administrative Management at our sixth and final graduation ceremony of 2008 in Nottingham on Saturday 29th November.
The graduation day is supported by IAM stakeholders and partners and we send our good wishes to all graduands, their families, friends and colleagues who will be attending the special event.
Good luck as well to all of our student members who will be taking exams during the December session. We wish you well and hope to see you at one of our graduation ceremonies in the New Year.
I hope that you find this month’s e.manager as engaging as always. We have many articles covering a range of subject areas and, of course, it has been given a fresh new look in line with the Autumn edition of manager that was posted to members at the beginning of this month.
And finally, I urge you to take note! We are excited to announce the redesign and relaunch of the exclusive 'Member's login area' of the IAM website. Please see below how you can soon be logged in a using this new service. |
Comment: Ray Moorcroft
It’s that time of year again, when IAM members in the Northern Hemisphere look enviously at the weather in places like Cape Town, Melbourne and Rio de Janeiro. Of course, our members in Singapore, Hong Kong and the West Indies always conceal a wry grin as they wonder what the fuss is about – they have their own problems with the weather – usually connected with extremes.
Our profession puts us right at the ‘front-line’ in terms of having to deal with the implications of these changing seasons..

Business Matters
In this month's Business Matters we look at a new CIPD study that suggests that when it comes to work, we are not as innovative as we like to think we are. Despite this, when it comes to our bottom-line and the recession hits we can be very flexible even affecting where we work.
We also keep you up-to-date on the latest equality legislation and let you into a little secret about those meetings that over-run and run and run. Finally, if you have a pub-quiz to go to, we show you a great resource for all those facts and figures. They could even come in useful for your business research.

CfA Human Resources tool pilot
Are you responsible for creating HR documents? Do you have any Business & Administration apprentices who work in HR? Or do you work closely with employers with regards to HR functions?
The Council for Administration (CfA) are piloting a new online HR document tool in December and we'd like volunteers to help us test the system. The tool has been created to help those who create HR documents and prompts them to fill in the essential information about a role within your organisation.
The HR tool will then create eight key documents based on the following information: job description, person specification, job advertisement, interview questions, selection criteria checklist, appraisal form, and review form and induction/training plan.
You can then save these documents or print them for use straight away, saving you time at every step in the process. If you are interested in piloting the tool in December, please register your interest by sending an email to Kerrie Fuller.

How to plan for resources
Carl Evans and Mark Richardson present the tenth in a series of articles for Administrative Managers to appear in both manager and e.manager. How to plan for resources.
A critical aspect of business planning and the business plan is a clear understanding of resource requirements. An Administrative Manager will need to determine whether existing resources are adequate to achieve the stated objectives, and if not, what investment may be needed to remedy the situation

It's your ship
Mike Abrashoff, former Commander of the Guided Missile Destroyer USS Benfold, used this phrase to inspire a dramatic seven-month turnaround from worst to best performing ship in the US Pacific Fleet. The measures by which this transformation was judged may be different to those used in business (combat-readiness records, for example), but the lessons that can be learned (efficiency savings alone amounted to $1.5m p.a.) can be applied to any organisation.
Nowadays Mike, who also helped draft the Air Defense Plan for US Naval Forces during Desert Storm, is a highly sought after keynote speaker and leadership development consultant. He took time out from his busy schedule to discuss leadership with manager Editor, Ray Moorcroft.

How to achieve continuous improvement
In Michael Armstrong’s recently published seventh edition of his book How to be an even better manager*, he deals with the subject of Continuous Improvement.
Echoing the theme of the Autumn 2008 issue of manager (The Management Armoury – a review of the special skills managers need to possess) and bearing in mind that Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is essential to building a set of skills for that that armoury, we felt it would be helpful to reproduce the following section of the book in this edition of e.manager.
